Landed Cost Calculator: Real Numbers for Sourcing Pet Beds from China (2026)

Sourcing Guide

The complete formula for calculating what a pet bed actually costs to land in the US — using real June 2026 freight rates, current tariff layers, and per-unit math your forwarder will not give you upfront.

Most wholesale buyers look at FOB price and add a rough freight estimate. That approach misses the PSS peak season surcharges, the dual-layer Section 301 tariffs, the destination port handling fees, and the FBA or platform cost stack. The gap between “what I thought it cost” and “what the invoice actually says” is where margin gets destroyed.

This guide gives you the full calculation — with actual June 2026 numbers from the China → US West Coast lane.

The 4 Cost Layers Every Buyer Must Calculate

Landed cost is not one number. It is four distinct layers, each with different variables. Miss any one and you are pricing from incomplete information.

1

FOB Price — The Factory Starting Point

The price you pay for goods loaded onto a vessel at the Chinese export port. This is your baseline. Every other cost is calculated on top of it or compared against it.

2

Ocean Freight — Base Rate + All Mandatory Surcharges

Base ocean freight plus BAF fuel adjustment, PSS peak season surcharge (mandatory June 15–June 30, 2026: +$1,600/20GP), and GRI general rate increases. The surcharges often exceed the base rate in peak season.

3

US Import Tariff — MFN Rate + Section 301

Pet beds from China carry two tariff layers: the standard MFN rate plus additional Section 301 tariffs on Chinese-origin goods. Both are calculated on the declared FOB value. Payment is required before US Customs releases the goods.

4

Destination Costs — Port, Customs, Trucking, Platform

DDC terminal fees, customs broker, MPF/HMF federal fees, inland trucking to warehouse or FBA center, prep and labeling, FBA fulfillment and storage, plus platform commission. This layer is consistently underestimated by first-time buyers.

Ocean Freight: China → US West Coast (LA/LB), June 2026

The transpacific lane entered early peak season in June. PSS surcharges of $1,600/20GP are mandatory across all carriers as of June 15. A GRI of $2,400/20GP takes effect July 1. The rate you book this week is substantially different from the rate available next month.

July 1 Rate Spike — Book Before June 30

GRI +$2,400/20GP activates July 1, 2026. Port-to-port rates will exceed $7,000+ for spot bookings. Spaces are already filling fast — late bookings also attract a $500–1,000 premium due to scarcity. If your inventory needs to arrive before Q4, the booking window is now.

Booking Type Container Base Rate (BAF incl.) PSS / GRI Add-on Port-to-Port Total
Spot Jun 15–30 20GP $3,800–$4,300 +$1,600 PSS $5,400–$5,900
Contract Long-term client 20GP $2,800–$3,300 +$1,600 PSS $4,400–$4,900
Post-GRI Jul 1 onward 20GP — +$2,400 GRI stacked $7,000–$8,000+

Carriers: COSCO / MSC / CMA CGM spot market. Origin charges (ORC, AMS/ISF, document, seal, export customs): ¥2,800–3,800/container. US destination charges (DDC, security surcharge, customs broker, MPF/HMF): $800–1,300/container. Not included in port-to-port total above.

20ft vs 40ft: The Unit Economics

Pet beds are light and bulky — volume fills the container, not weight. A 40ft container carries approximately 3× the units of a 20ft, but costs only $1,000–1,500 more in ocean freight. For most buyers with more than 2,000 units on order, the 40ft is the obvious choice on a per-unit cost basis.

20ft Container (20GP)

Capacity
~1,500 units
Standard pet bed mix, S–L sizes
Freight (spot, Jun 2026)
$5,400–$5,900
Port-to-port, surcharges included
Per-unit freight cost
~$3.60–$3.93
Before destination charges
Best for
First orders, new SKU test runs
Better Per-Unit Value

40ft Container (40HQ)

Capacity
~4,500 units
3× the volume of a 20ft
Premium vs 20ft
+$1,000–$1,500 only
Marginal increase for triple the load
Per-unit freight cost
~$1.50–$1.80
Before destination charges
Best for
Repeat orders 2,000+ units

US Tariff Classification for Fabric Pet Beds

Standard fabric pet beds — polyester or velvet outer shell with PP cotton, memory foam, or slow-rebound sponge filling — are classified under HTS 6307.90.9891 (or 6307.90.9889 depending on exact construction). This code carries both the baseline MFN tariff and the additional Section 301 China-origin surcharge. There is no VAT in the US — tariffs are applied ad valorem on the declared FOB value only.

Tariff Summary — HTS 6307.90.9891 (Standard Fabric Pet Beds)

HTS Code (fabric-fill pet beds) 6307.90.9891 / 6307900090
Layer 1: MFN Base Rate Applied on declared FOB value
Layer 2: Section 301 Additional (China origin) Stacked on top of MFN
VAT / GST None — US does not apply VAT at import
Combined impact on landed cost model Factored into FOB × ~0.4 (freight + tariff combined)

Confirm your exact HTS binding ruling at hts.usitc.gov before your first shipment. The 6307.90 code covers the vast majority of standard pet beds, but PU leather constructions and orthopedic foam beds may classify differently. A licensed customs broker can confirm this for under $200.

Live Calculation: S / M / L Pet Beds at $30 / $40 / $50 FOB

The following example uses a 20ft spot booking, June 2026 (pre-GRI), 1,500 units at the $5,650 midpoint freight rate, plus $1,100 destination charges and ¥3,300 origin charges (~$460 at 7.2). Total per-container overhead: approximately $7,210 — or about $4.80/unit.

Size FOB/unit Freight/unit Tariff & charges (≈FOB×0.24) Wholesale landed Amazon all-in (×1.9) Target retail
S $30 ~$4.80 ~$7.20 ~$42 ~$57 $105–$120
M $40 ~$4.80 ~$9.60 ~$54 ~$76 $140–$160
L $50 ~$4.80 ~$12.00 ~$67 ~$95 $175–$200

Amazon all-in (×1.9) includes FBA fulfillment + storage + receiving (FOB × 0.12–0.18). Target retail at FOB × 3.5–4 to maintain margin after platform commission (~15%). Wholesale landed = FOB + freight + tariff + port/customs/trucking, before FBA or platform fees.

Post-GRI Impact (July 1+ Bookings)

Add approximately $1.60/unit for 20ft bookings after July 1 (+$2,400 ÷ 1,500 units). For the M-size example, Amazon all-in rises from ~$76 to ~$78 — pushing the minimum sustainable retail price to $145–165 to maintain the same gross margin. The 40ft container absorbs this increase much better: +$2,400 ÷ 4,500 units = only ~$0.53/unit additional.

The Pricing Multiplier Reference

These multipliers come from real shipment and P&L data across standard fabric pet beds. Use them as a quick sanity check against your pricing model — if your numbers diverge significantly, there is usually a cost layer you have missed.

Freight + Tariff Only
+0.4×
The rigid import cost layer added to FOB. Does not include FBA fees, platform commission, or last-mile trucking.
Wholesale Landed (pre-FBA)
1.8–2.1×
FOB + ocean freight + tariff + all port charges + trucking + labeling prep. This is what your wholesale buyer pays at minimum.
Standard Amazon Retail
3.5–4×
Covers FBA fees, 15% platform commission, and a sustainable gross margin. Minimum for mainstream fabric pet beds.
Premium / Branded Retail
4.5–5.5×
Memory foam, PU leather, or OEM-branded products. Higher FOB but better margin per unit and less price competition.

Costs That Only Appear When Something Goes Wrong

These are not guaranteed on every shipment — but they are common enough that experienced buyers budget for at least one per year. Pet beds going into peak season on a congested US West Coast port face elevated risk on all three.

$1,800–$4,000
US Customs exam / inspection fee (single occurrence)
$120–$300/day
Port demurrage after 7-day free time (common during peak season congestion)
+3–7 days
Typical additional transit time during US West Coast peak congestion periods
$100–$250/ton
Overweight surcharge if 20GP exceeds recommended 18-ton load (pet beds rarely trigger this)
