What "Removable & Washable" Really Means — A Buyer's Construction Guide

Sourcing Guide

The label says washable. But washable how? Which parts? With what zipper? Here is what to look for before you place your order.

"Removable and washable" has become a standard selling point for pet beds — and a frequently misunderstood one. Buyers assume the feature is included. End consumers assume the entire bed can go in the machine. Neither assumption is always correct, and the gap between expectation and reality is where returns happen.

This guide explains exactly what this feature means at the factory level, what separates a well-made removable cover from a poorly made one, and what to ask before you order.

Removable & Washable Is Not a Default Feature

The most important thing to understand: removable washable construction is a specification, not a standard. It is made to order. If you do not request it explicitly when placing your wholesale order, you may receive a bed with a sewn-shut cover that cannot be removed without scissors.

Specify It at Order Time

Do not assume. When placing a production order for pet beds, confirm in writing whether the cover is removable and how it is attached. A removable zipper cover adds a small amount to unit cost and must be specified as part of your product requirements — it is not automatically included on every style.

Once specified, the standard construction method is a zipper opening that runs along one or more edges of the bed, allowing the outer cover to be pulled off the inner cushion or filling. This is the dominant construction method because it is reliable, consumer-familiar, and survives repeated wash cycles without losing function.

Not All Zippers Are Equal — What to Specify

The zipper is the component that buyers and consumers will interact with most, and it is the part most likely to fail if underspecified. A cheap zipper on a well-made bed undermines the entire product's perceived quality and generates the most common source of negative reviews: "zipper broke after two washes."

Standard Spec
YKK #5
The benchmark for quality pet bed zippers. Smooth operation, durable slider, reliable over hundreds of open/close cycles.
Zipper Type
Concealed
Hidden zipper runs along a seam rather than exposed on the surface — cleaner appearance, less likely to snag fur or paw pads.
Pull Style
Loop or Tab
A loop or fabric tab makes it easier for consumers to open — especially important for larger beds with longer zipper runs.
Position
Bottom or Side
Zipper on the underside keeps it out of sight and out of reach of pets. Side placement is more accessible for washing.

When sourcing, always request the zipper brand and gauge in your product specification sheet. "Zipper" alone is not a specification. A factory that does not confirm YKK #5 or equivalent will often substitute with the cheapest available option — which you will not discover until the first customer complaint.

What Happens to the Filling When the Cover Comes Off

A removable cover that lets the filling shift, bunch, or fall apart during removal defeats much of the purpose. For PP Cotton filling in particular — which is loose fiber — removing the outer cover can pull the fill out with it, leaving you with a pile of wadding to stuff back in before re-covering.

The solution is sewn tack points: small anchor stitches that fix the filling or inner liner to the shell at regular intervals across the surface of the bed. Think of them like the button tufting on a sofa cushion — they hold the interior structure in place so the filling stays put when the cover is removed and reattached.

Ask For Tack Points on PP Cotton Beds

If you are ordering PP Cotton fill with a removable cover, request internal tack points (also called anchor stitching or quilting points) to keep the fill stable. This is a minor production detail that significantly improves the end-consumer experience — and reduces the chance of a review that says "the stuffing came out everywhere."

For foam fills (memory foam or slow-rebound sponge), the insert is rigid enough that it stays in place naturally. Tack points are not necessary, but a well-fitted cover — one where the foam insert slides in smoothly without forcing, and does not shift inside once zipped — is still worth specifying in your sample approval process.

Why the Cover Does Not Shrink — And What Consumers Should Know

One of the most common concerns with washable covers is post-wash shrinkage: the cover comes out of the machine smaller than the insert, and will not zip back on. This is a real problem with fabric that has not been properly treated before cutting.

Quality pet bed manufacturers pre-shrink fabric before cutting — the material goes through a heat and moisture treatment that removes the residual shrinkage built into the weave during production. By the time the cover is cut and sewn, the fabric has already contracted as much as it is going to. Machine washing the finished cover does not cause further dimensional change.

  • ✓ Pre-shrunk fabric (standard in quality production)Cover dimensions remain stable after machine washing. The insert will still fit after the cover is washed and dried.
  • ✓ Warm wash, gentle cycleThe correct care instruction for most pet bed covers. Hot wash can affect dye and elastic components even on pre-shrunk fabric.
  • ✓ Line dry or tumble dry lowHigh heat in the dryer is the more common source of dimensional change than the wash cycle itself. Specify low-heat or air dry on your care labels.
  • ! Do not wash foam insertsOnly the outer cover is machine washable. Memory foam and slow-rebound sponge inserts must be kept out of the machine and spot-cleaned only. This must be stated clearly on the care label.
  • When you receive samples, wash the cover twice before approving production. It tells you whether the pre-shrink treatment was done properly, and gives you the actual care performance data you need to write accurate product descriptions.

How to Order Removable Washable Correctly

Use this as your specification checklist before confirming a production order for removable washable pet beds.

    1

State it explicitly in the PO

Write "removable cover with zipper closure" in your purchase order or product specification sheet. Do not assume the factory will include it unless it is written.

    2

    Specify the zipper: YKK #5

Name the brand and gauge. If the factory proposes an alternative, request a sample before approving. Test the zipper through 30 open/close cycles before sign-off.

    3

For PP Cotton: request tack points

Ask for anchor stitching on the inner liner to prevent fill migration during cover removal and replacement. Confirm placement in the sample approval.

    4

    Confirm pre-shrink treatment

Ask the factory to confirm that all fabric is pre-shrunk before cutting. Then machine wash your sample cover twice at the intended care temperature to verify.

    5

    Write accurate care labels

Cover: machine washable, warm, gentle. Insert: do not machine wash. This distinction must be on the care label and in your product listing. Do not let customers discover it from a damaged foam insert.
